Françoise Favretto, atelier de l'agneau Klimperei's 17th release is also their first one for an American label, the small independent Acidsoxx. The booklet includes very little information, but mentions that Baboler is a "collection of previously unreleased odds & ends", which may indicate that this album still features Françoise Lefebvre, who left the band in 2002 (the music is only credited to Klimperei, without further details). Therefore, Baboler appears to be yet another collection of material predating her departure, like the Gazul CD Patamob — which came out only a few months after this one — and the series of remixed collections released by the Japanese label Novel Cell Poem during the group's hiatus. The 23 tunes on Baboler sure sound like vintage Klimperei, although many of them are more densely arranged and multi-tracked than usual. In fact, the album shows extra attention to detail, sound quality, and studio work — without compromising the spontaneous, naïve character that is the heart and soul of the project's art. As a whole, it conveys a certain sense of melancholia that is usually less palpable than that. Klimperei's music is gentle, simple, and inviting, paradoxically comforting in its bizarre instrumentation, mostly consisting of toy instruments, (cheap) keyboards, and guitars. Baboler remains true to the genre, adding little to previous albums. It may come packaged with very little details, but its artwork is significantly more interesting than the awfully designed Patamob. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide Your Imaginary Friend

Maybe you can call this “chamber carnival” or “chamber avante-DIY”. “Toypop” appears to be the moniker this outfit has taken for over 20 years. All instrumental pieces that utilize piano and a plethora of toy instruments, giving this an overall childlike/naive quality to what is really pretty complex stuff. Birdsongs of the Mesozoic come to mind as well as The Residents, Dr. Seuss. I’m partial to the later more developed tracks.

1) brief, music box quality
2) carnival waltz
3) slow, melodic
4) upbeat, near folky feel
5) pensive minor feel, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic come to mind
6) simple piano melodic 7) simple swing
8) cute minimal waltz
9) very minimal, spookier, frog sounds in back
10) minimalism again, simple dark melody
11) dark haunting melody
12) brief, simple, collage of instruments
13) epic melody carried in organ
14) very simplistic childish, chopsticks feel
15) weird, flute and treatments, brief
16) dark slow, cabaret in a bottle of prozac
17) dark slow waltz
18) upbeat silly pop feel
19) tribal feel with congas and flute
20) slow meander, dissonant acoustic guitar, minimal percussion
21) childlike waltz with toy train whistle quality
22) backwards tracks with piano, creepy and cool, experimental chill quality, ends with a “babbling brook” and bird sounds
23) pretty piano melody, composition
New from Acidsoxx Musicks!! Twenty-three previously unreleased instrumental tracks from the archives of C. Petchanatz, reigning godfather of French toypop, covering diverse musickal territories from the carnivalesque to the contemplative, from Dr. Suess to Erik Satie and back again. Twice.

olivier degardin/traverses Le nouveau Klimperei s'appelle Baboler.
David Fenech — blog Again, like I said, this year will bring us a lot of Klimperei cd's. Till now it was mainly old work released on cd for the first time. Now Christophe Petchanatz releases his 17th cd (including the split-cd's) on which you only find brand new material. It is also his first cd on an American label, namely the pretty deranged Acidsoxx Musicks (Scavenger Quartet, Maisie, Al & Del, Falter Bramnk, etc) that seems to aim at toy-avantgarde, cabaret and weird underground music. Klimperei perfectly fits in there with it's toy-orchestra. Christophe brings a very modest and sad, this time with only instrumental tracks. Despite of the recognizable sound of Klimperei he always flirts with other genres, which makes every cd unique. The melancholic part hits you probably harder with this kind of music, because of the touching, childish sounds. And a sad child hurts. A lot of African and Oriental elements are passing by now, although they're sometimes wellhidden in the wellknown Klimperei-sound. Piano, xylophone, keyboard, acoustic and electric guitar, windinstruments, accordion and of course lots of (other) toy-instruments reign in this bleak music. Nevertheless it is also atmoshperic and it could be a fine soundtrack for a Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie. Think somewhere between The residents and pascal Comelade. Christophe show us that he is a strange, but most of all nice and unique musician
