about

The music of Klimperei, barely changed over the years, now is spreading to new territories. This is already second album-like soundtrack, but not imaginery as "Alice in Wonderlands" appeared one year before. "Big & Bang" is the theaterpiece directed by Patrick Dubost and presented in Him Théâtre du Verseau (Vénissieux). It is also represented in the program of the Biennale Théâtre Jeune Public of Lyon in June of 2001. The whole idea of that piece is based on burlesque encounter of two different, but real persons, Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton, playfully renamed to Big and Bang. Their presence is overwhelming but somewhere out of time and space, and it stands for the cause of various funny situations, humorous events, clue fables and poetic images. "Big and Bang are living in two adjacent flats somewhere between chaos and the harmony. Big and Bang listen to the music of Klimperei, of the naive ritornellos that broke free from a circus or from the fireman dancing hall, or maybeby it is the music of vaptured spheres tat is broadcasted by a mechanical and portable orchestra. Big and Bang are brothers: they enlighten salad with their eyes, their hands are full of bees and are looking for a place where time is hidden." Easy and confusing, this epigraph give you an idea of what's going on. The friend of mine who visited me while listening this album for a first time, told me that he couldn't believe that anyone can listen to this music with the general purpose. If it sounds behind the closed door, it's easier to imagine that there is someone listening to radioshow for children, or watching cartoons, or simply there is a sort of hilarious children birthday party. 38 miniatures, some of them are made of just a single sound, but other are real songs, in which sounds are like Lego-details, even being misplaced or misused still making impression and adding some charm. At last I must to say some boring clever words which all amateur people love to say: the references for this music are names like Residents, Samla Mammas Manna, Ensemble Nimbus, Pascal Comelade, Michael Nyman, Phillip Glass and Richard Pinhas.

Françoise and Christophe Petchanatz are already since the eighties Klimperei, a toy-core project which call reminiscences with Pascal Comelade and The Residents.
At 'Big & Bang' stands 38 childish composition: the longest last 3' 30. Also the instruments fits with the childishness of the songs : cheap keyboard sounds and toy-instruments.
The result is a nervous gay sound, with sometimes some darker moments. The Teletubies would be jalous. The Child in me realy enjoyed it. Merci à Jean-Pierre Espil, Lazzi Galai, Didier Gibelin. More radiant, glowing, touching, soft, splendid, joyous, friendly, child-like wonder from the most minimal on instruments, yet always mildly mesmerizing. Thirty-eight delicate and awe-inspired ditties in one hour for days spent in blissful retreat - whistling while we work or just drifting off. Downtown music gallery, USA. Play Announcement :
Big & Bang is the burlesque encounter of two individuals who are on the total opposite side, a "brief history of time" full of logical dazzling sights, of poetic and humorous dizziness.
Between sky and earth, the telescoping of these two individuals, Big and Bang, evokes the hypothetic meeting with Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton. Big et Bang are living in two adjacent flats somewhere between chaos and harmony. One flat is perfectly well ordered, the other one is a house revelation of the cosmic desorder. Big and bang are listening to Klimperei's music, naïve ritornellos that broke free from a circus or from the firemen dance hall, or maybe it is the music of captured spheres that is broadcasted by a mechanical and portable orchestra. Big and Bang are two brothers ; they enlighten salad with their eyes, their hands are full of bees and are looking for the place where time is hidden.
Take care,
Michael Rae en Rochester Etats-unis GONZO CIRCUS :
Since the eightees Christophe and Françoise Petchanatz have got their project Klimperei. Also Al+Del and Delete are their brainchilds. Mostly they create naive sounding music with electronics and toy- instruments, which reminds of congenial spirits like Pascal Comelade and Pierre Bastien. They often have worked together with Bastien. "Big & Bang" is their latest cd and sounds quite different from their most recent releases. The childish part is still there, but the sound is less accessible and more avantgardistic. Medieval tinted, minimal, slightly industrial music and musique concrete, all made with a lot of humor and performed with toy-instruments. That gives the music that touching effect. You can also add The Residents and Nouvelles Lectures Cosmopolites to the earlier mentioned references. Klimperei more than once proves to be an absolute unique band.

Jaume Pujol - Marzo 2001 ENGLISH TRANSLATION
The French Klimperei began their career in 1985 and they have published a heap of works from then on. Their music has been described in many different ways, receiving adjectives as music "toy naïf", "acoustics", "experimental", "minimalista", infantile, "neoclassicist ", complex, "vanguard", lunar and "French pop music of toy". Recently José Nafría commented in progVisions his penultimate work Alice aux country you give merveilles, and I will make the characteristic with his last album, titled Big & bang.
The history to which one gives musical form in the disk is the burlesque reencuentro of two completely opposed historical characters (Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton), and it is developed like a brief history of the time full with logical fables and poetic and humorous elements. The music is compound and interpreted by the two components of the formation, Françoise and Christophe Petchanatz, and it was presented in direct last January in Him Théâtre du Verseau in the Gallic city of Vénissieux. It is also foreseen that it represents in the mark of the Biennale Théâtre Jeune Public of Lyon in June of this year again.
Big & bang is compound for 38 miniatures that oscillate between the 4 seconds and the 5:30 minutes, and the music that he/she offers us would be part of the innovative music in conceptual sense, although it presents certain progressive elements as the stylistic synthesis. The plasmación of the sound Klimperei is not at all complex or experimental, on the contrary, being original is a delight for the senses. And how is it? Basically music minimalista in the sense of the use of the repetition and the smallest number possible of notes or scales for the compositions, like they would make composers like Michael Nyman, Philip Glass or Wim Mertens. Personally, it would classify it as toy music, with a potent component naïf, based on a heap of percussions, diverse instruments of wind, acoustic and electric guitars and keyboards, highlighting the piano. The sound is very sweet and it would be the music environmental ideal for a store of old toys (you forget you the Toys ' r' us), a guiñol artisan or an exhibition of wooden marionettes.
The general tone of the disk is calm and if we look for references, these they would be Pascal Comelade's work, the Bel Sings Orchestra (formed by him), the Richard Pinhas more naïf, and the appeased sounds RIVER in Etron Fou Leloublan, Ensemble Nimbus, Volapük or the Samla Mammas Manna of Kaka (now I should make an explanation : Kaka in Swedish means cake, not what you/they are thinking the Castilian-speaking ones). In certain sense it seems robots' music, as if the Kraftwerk of Radio-aktivität, Computer world or Electric coffee abandoned the metal of their synthesizers and decicieran to make wooden acoustic music.
The topics that it would highlight of the abundance of titles would be "The fée didascalie", "Bang", "Musée gives objets miniatures", "Retrovailles" or "Him cosmos dans the cuisine", but they cannot be judged for separated from the rest of the work that is a musical and thematic unit. In vaisselle Competition (II) they can even be some references to the most infantile Beatles in topics as "Yellow submarine."
In summary, a great work of a very special formation that goes back us to the world of the guiñoles and the theaters, the childhood in a word. A good album of a very original group whose quality has attracted names of the world of the current music as the great P. J. Harvey (of passing I recommend you its excellent To bring you my love), with who they have collaborated in several works. Get this work and you will thank it to us.
