about

Review by François Couture [-]

Operating out of New Mexico, Acidsoxx Musicks is one of those incredibly fun little indie labels releasing music you never heard made by freaky artists you never heard of, in a style you would never dare to label. Psycho Pop, Vol. 1 brings together all of the imprint's house names on one disc for you to sample and (hopefully) further investigate. CDs like this are more utilities than albums, and this one is no different; despite obvious care to make the play list as palatable as possible, it's still a bumpy ride down the 15 tracks. Luckily, the label has a rather well-defined niche: call it psycho-pop, toy pop, alternative fun, childish music, or experimental naïve -- it all comes down to bedroom songs and tunes made by people who know where to draw the line between self-indulgent experimentalism and experimental fun. A touch of satire, a bit of pastiche, a good measure of lo-fi, and a ton of wicked intentions sum up the recipe. From Norm Scott's Yankovic-esque "The Sandbox Legacy" to the Hawkwind-like pummeling of Hello Daylight's "Spacefloater," from Falter Bramnk's mutant pop to Pope John Paul III's questionable (yet hilarious) humor and Klimperei's seductive instrumental, Psycho Pop, Vol. 1 doesn't shy away from diversity. There is also a 16th track after the 15 that are announced on the tray card, presenting a Japanese-style psychedelic song and a deconstructed cover of "Strawberry Fields Forever."
